Painted Oaks
Farm is
a 55 acre facility for horse retirement, located in the
heart of Virginia. Our retired horse boarding farm is
conveniently located 5 miles off Interstate 85 and 15
miles off Interstate 95, offering easy access along the
east coast, including, but not limited to, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The farm is owned by
Dennis and Daphne Sexton, who have over 25 years of experience
with horses, and first hand experience with equine retirement
and treating horses post-op.
Our
business is a horse retirement farm devoted to lay ups,
and performance horses in the off-season. Painted Oaks
Retirement Horse Boarding accepts any horse from all
disciplines - pleasure, companion, racing, polo, dressage,
barrel racers, or steeplechase. Painted Oaks offer convenient
and affordable layover horse boarding in Virginia. If
space permits, we accept over-night layovers for those
traveling in the Virginia area with their horses. We
do not train horses, offer riding lessons, or lease
horses for trail rides. We focus on our horse retirement
stables and lay ups to ensure we are meeting our customers'
expectations. We are personally involved in the operation
of the farm and care of your horse. Therefore, Dennis
or Daphne, not an hourly worker, will be responsible
for your horse. We firmly believe in a natural approach

Oaks accepts horses for pasture boarding from all 50
U.S. states, including, but not limited to: Alabama,
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,
Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico,
New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode
Island. South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington,
and Wisconsin.

the decision to retire my horse was the one of the hardest
decisions I have had to make. As my first and only horse,
Opal has taught me so much, took me far and put up with
too much nonsense from me; I owed it to her to let her
live out her remaining years just being a horse. After

quite suddenly recovered from an injury that had made
her pasture sound only for the previous 18 months. I

Early
this year Opal started showing obvious signs she was
done with riding. She has Pedal Osteitis in both front
hooves and even with custom, forged bar shoes she was
starting to show discomfort. She was also showing signs
that her previous injury was beginning to bother her
again. In April, I accepted it was time to retire her.
I looked around again for retirement farms, but kept
coming back to Painted Oaks. After much emotional soul
searching and procrastination, I finally contacted Daphne.
Opal
arrived at Painted Oaks on June 6, 2016, her 22nd birthday.
Watching her leave with the hauler, I was terrified
I had made the wrong decision. She was no longer 15
minutes down the road; I could no longer jump in the
car to visit her on a whim, or give her our monthly
four-hour spa treatment. I was an emotional wreck.
Finally, at the end of August, I was able to take time
off from work to visit her. When I arrived at the farm
and saw her, a great sense of relief came over me. She
looked great! She was very content in her surroundings
(as was I), quite happy with her new friends, in great
health and not limping!. After spending a couple of
hours with her, I went home with a sense of peace I
did not anticipate.
I
no longer worry about my decision to retire her and
send her to Painted Oaks because I know she is in great
hands with Daphne.
